Washington County Department of Elections Will be Open for Absentee Voting in Abingdon Town Election

(ABINGDON, VA) –The Washington County Department of Elections will be open beginning Friday, March 20, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. for residents of the Town of Abingdon who wish to cast an in-person absentee ballot for the May 5, 2020 Town Council Election.  In-Person absentee voting will be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

“Our office will be open beginning March 20, 2020 to allow Abingdon residents to cast absentee ballots and submit voter registration forms,” said Derek Lyall, Director of Elections in Washington County.  “Any voter with questions or concerns about the upcoming election should contact our office for additional information,” Lyall continued.

The main entrances to the Washington County Government Center Building will be locked due to the closure of the building.  Voters who visit the elections office will need to drive to the rear of the building and enter through the door at the far-end of the building.  Signs will be in place to direct voters to the correct door.

Voters who are not currently registered to vote or need to update their residence address may do so by visiting our office during normal hours, by requesting that a voter registration application be mailed to them, or online by visiting https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/.  The deadline to register to vote or to update an address for the May 5 election will be April 13, 2020.

Any voter who is concerned about visiting the office for in-person absentee voting or going to the polls on Election Day due to COVID-19 may wish to consider requesting that an absentee ballot be mailed to them by using Reason Code 2A (disability or illness) on the absentee application so that they may vote from home.  Anyone who wishes to vote from home may request an absentee ballot by visiting https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/ or by contacting our office directly to request an application.

The final day to request an absentee ballot by mail will be April 28, 2020.  The final day to cast an in-person absentee ballot will be Saturday, May 2, 2020.

Anyone with questions about absentee voting or the upcoming election is encouraged to contact the Washington County Department of Elections Office at (276) 676-6227 or by email at dlyall@washcova.com
