Washington County, Virginia, invites all parties interested in acquiring a Civil War Monument to submit letters of intent by December 10, 2021.

Abingdon, Virginia – The Board of Supervisors of Washington County, Virginia, invites all parties interested in acquiring one or both of the Civil War Monuments currently located on the grounds of the Washington County, Virginia, Courthouse to submit letters of intent for such acquisition by the submission deadline of 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2021. This includes all those who may have previously shared or sent a statement of interest or intent.

All letters of intent to acquire a Civil War Monument are required to include the following:

• Letter of intent identifying the specific monument/s wished to be acquired
• Contact name and contact information of requestor
• Name of entity the requestor represents
• Background information and description of the requesting entity
• Disclosure regarding public, private, nonprofit, business status and purpose
• Specific proposal and offer to acquire and transport the monument/s
• Specification of exact location where monument would be placed, if acquired
• Purpose for placement of monument/s at proposed location
• Whether proposed location would allow public viewing of the monument/s
• Proposed timeline and source of funding for moving, transporting, and maintaining the monument/s

Submissions may be submitted electronically using the Monument Interest Form found on the Civil War Monuments Webpage, linked below, or submitted by U.S. mail or hand-delivery to the County Government Center, ATTN: Lucy Phillips, County Attorney; 1 Government Center Place, Suite A; Abingdon, Virginia 24210. Submissions received on or before the submission deadline noted above will be presented to the Board of Supervisors at its regular meeting on December 14, 2021.

The monuments offered for relocation are:
a. The statue of a Confederate soldier including the stone plinth on which it is standing, which is labeled, “To the Confederate Soldiers of Washington County, Virginia. Erected May 30, 1907”, and including all additional engravings and commemorative plaques that are attached to the plinth; and
b. The cenotaph, which is labeled, “A Memorial to the Generals from Washington County who served in the War of 1861-1865” and includes other engraved text regarding such Generals.
